How many days of travel is sufficient to appreciate the beauty of Taiwan without rushing?
I love to explore the culture, street food, places of interest but at a relaxing pace and hate to rush by going out too early everyday and getting back really late. Also, I hate to keep rushing in order to travel to many different places within a day because I like to appreciate the beauty of every country. From my description, how many days do you think would be sufficient for me to travel in Taiwan. I'm looking at 9 days? What are the places that you recommend? How many days of travel is sufficient to appreciate the beauty of Taiwan without rushing?
Hi, This is Pagan Dan's wife answering. He and I lived in Taiwan on and off for five of the past seven years and we feel we've just scratched the surface. What can you do in nine days? hmmm.... Well, you will probably start with Taipei. I lived and taught there for three years. It was great fun riding the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and just hopping off at an interesting place, of which there is no shortage. On the Brown Line, go to the end to the Taipei Zoo. While there take the Gondola up the Mountain and stop for tea in the mountainside at one of the many tea restaurants. Explore the town of Muzha one stop back on the MRT. Great food there, too. Hop back on the Brown Line and get off at Zhongxiao Fuxing stop. Explore the back lanes for more great food. Walk north on Fuxing to the shopping mall if you enjoy shopping or seeing a movie (on the 9th or 10th floor). Walk over to Dunhua Road and hit the back lanes again for more great food. Certainly no shortage of fabulous restaurants. You can do similar things on each of the red, blue and orange lines. Two weeks might suffice but in a pinch you might catch the highlites in a week. Go to Danshui, 1/2 hr north of Taipei. It's my most favourite place with it's boardwalk. You can snack as you walk along. Takes about 1/2 hour from one end to the other. There's also Yangminshan Mountain, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial, Dr. Sun Yat Sen Hall, Taipei 101 and more. Go online and check out things to do in Taipei and around Taiwan.
During your 2nd week, you could go down the stunning east coast. Don't miss Taroko Gorge which was 1/2 hr from where we lived in Hualien. Loved it there, too. Then, travel south through the most stunning scenery to Kenting, a local tourist getaway. Over west to Kaoshiang, the 2nd largest city in Taiwan. Continue up the west coast or go inland to Miaoli and/or Nantou Counties. Incredible scenery + Sun Moon Lake. Travelling in Taiwan could be an endless adventure for you. I'd allow a month but two weeks would give you a terrific overview. Enjoy!!! The tourists haven't discovered it yet. And another thing. You'll love the low prices of everything. Food is so inexpensive that we ate out all the time. If you live in N. America, you haven't experienced great Chinese food yet. Taiwan is the best. They also have great Thai food. Don't miss eating those shrimp cakes. Yummy! BTW, make sure to interact lots with the local people. You'll love them. They're so kind, friendly and helpful. Skip the Makong Gondola because it's broken (and it was just built too, hmm I wonder why) and they need to spend lots of NT$ + time to clean up that mess.
Taipei is a nice place- but too many overrated tourist traps. Yang-ming shan is definitely overrated- I mean come on, there are thousands of better looking mountains out in the east/central/south part of the island! Then there's Taipei 101 which can be summed up as a tower with a built in mall. That said if your coming over new-years (regular) then check out the fireworks show at the 101.
Oh, and I think the MRT doesn't run to the zoo on weekends anymore, so plan accordingly.
If you're looking for beauty, you can skip the West coast entirely... that will save you some time.

Sometimes if you had / have a near death experience or a close shave at death such as a car accident, or similar; you can start to see natures things for the first time ever (cos that's the effect it can have) It can really open your eyes and give you a new lease of life in general.

when you go through dark periods in your life, seeing something wonderful like a rainbow (I mean, where do the colours come from..no-one said god had paint!) can make so much difference to your outlook.
Music also does this for me..If Im down, and I listen to certain types of music, it uplifts me...Im totally not a religious person, Indeed I dont believe in God at all, but I really do think that nature uplifts the soul...all beautiful things do...
I believe that if we all surround ourselves with things that we find beautiful, in our homes and our lives in general, that we will always feel good about stuff, never get the reason to feel down or suicidal, and I think that would be perfect... everyone happy,,,, what a great place the world would be

i think we should not always think od benefit or loss... our mind wants relax... but today we all busy with our own stuff....

Schindler's List was a magnificent movie, but dealt with horrific subject matter.
Picasso's Gurenica is also great art - it makes a statement but portrays the tragedy of war.
I have often defined art as either something difficult to reproduce - the exquisite Greek and Roman statues found in museums, a wonderful painting, or a symphony - or something less so, although also totally original. (Like the paintings at the Metropolitan museum in NYC - the first person to present a plain white canvas with a red stripe gets credit for the idea.)
So a faithful reproduction of something ugly can be great art.

It's the darker things about ourselves that we seek to resolve...there's nothing we need to really EXAMINE about beauty, perfection, and contentment. They make great things to hang over the sofa in the living room, but they're not so interesting to sit in a gallery and contemplate.
Sometimes a person's expression of pain, or other dark emotion, can be beautiful...just the risk they took expressing it, the fact that they got it OUTSIDE themselves. Maybe it's not just the end result that we find interesting or worthy of being called ';art'; but the process of drawing that out from oneself.
Art has long set the standards for beauty in a given era. Whether it's chubby Rubeneque beauties or Twiggy, the arts depict and beauty follows.
Many people wouldn't appreciate a still life with dead rabbits and pheasants in their dining rooms today, but it was quite fashionable at the time.

Sorry to use a cliche but Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not all art is considered beautiful at all, that's an incorrect assumption. If you think that a painting is ugly then it's ugly, beauty is not always a universal truth but a very subjective concept. I consider art to be anything creative; paintings, sculptures and even more obscure art like painting chewing gum on London pavements but just because it is art it doesn't automatically mean it is good!
The first answer on the list is a good one. I'm not a big art fan, but I live in a town that has a good college, and they get new exhibits every couple of months in their art gallery. My wife and I always go see them, because she enjoys it. I like the pieces that you can feel the passion of the artist come through. You can tell if the artist was just working on a piece to make a piece, or if they were putting their heart and soul into it. That is where the beauty comes out. Like the old cliche' says, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't know if art is exactly about beauty. I think art is about the artist expressing theirself with passion, love, joy, or pain.
Most of the great sculptures, paintings, movies, and musical pieces of our time are based upon events or feelings that are down-right ugly, but the finished piece is beautiful because of the passion and love the artist put into it.
Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...I do have to disagree with you when you say love is A L W A Y S beautiful, no it isn't, and yes you can still call it love...you must have never experience this...now..Beauty and Art...Beauty is a state of mind where You may think it is or isn't pretty, that is your choice. Art is a physical thing, something someone has created (painted, sculptured etc...but ironically they both can touch the heart, just writing this excerpt warms my heat thinking of the two...This is why we are individuals , having our own opinions...and how we perceive things...sometimes it is all up to you,making choices...whats pretty to me can be down right ugly to you..you may love the Mona Lisa I may detest it. Choices and opinions ..Like I said... it is all up to y o u.........
I don't think that all art is necessarily beautiful. And I don't think that art even strives to be beautiful (not all the time). Art is not synonymous with love.
I consider art to be a thing designed to provoke an emotional response, something meant to provoke thought or express an idea. The word art has a very broad definition.
The Dali Lama has an interesting perspective on what beauty is, which I agree with. It is also a very broad (nebulous) definition. I'll try to paraphrase: One can find beauty in anything - war, love, anything - it's user defined. He asks: Can even the art of killing be considered beauty, especially painless killing?
What do you consider art? How do you perceive beauty? I have been trying to answer these questions for months and have gotten nowhere. Art can represent beauty, but it can also provoke other emotions. Or get people to think.
Schindler's List was a magnificent movie, but dealt with horrific subject matter.
Picasso's Gurenica is also great art - it makes a statement but portrays the tragedy of war.
I have often defined art as either something difficult to reproduce - the exquisite Greek and Roman statues found in museums, a wonderful painting, or a symphony - or something less so, although also totally original. (Like the paintings at the Metropolitan museum in NYC - the first person to present a plain white canvas with a red stripe gets credit for the idea.)
So a faithful reproduction of something ugly can be great art.

Art is the STUDY of the different techniques you can use.In order to do real art you have to prepare yourself. Art is intentional and rational, you can express ideas, you have standardized rules for it.There are many definitions for art
In the other hand Beauty or aesthetic is based on subjective opinions ,has to do with emotions and feelings, your five senses are involved.In art something ';ugly or grotesque'; can be ';beautifully '; expressed on a painting. Also depend on the culture around the person, Time, space, and experiences.
Actually, I think love can be downright ugly as well.
I consider ';art'; to be something that evokes a response/emotion. That emotion doesn't have to be ';happiness and light.'; In fact, happiness and light are easy to represent, easy to recognize, and, as odd as it sounds hearing myself say this, can be kind of mundane.
